Carbs for a 650 in the Eurosport frame

Why it’s a question at all
Most CX500s have a single-spine frame, and on those the 650’s carbs don’t fit, so swap guides are full of carb fabrication. My Eurosport has the triple-backbone frame shared with the GL500, GL650 and CX650E. In that frame the 650’s own carbs fit.
So I have two routes:
- The engine’s own Keihin carbs, rebuilt, if they come with the engine and are sound.
- A Mikuni VM34 kit from Murray’s Carbs, or a Mikunioz VM34 or TM34 kit from Australia.
Which Murray kit
Murray sells three that could apply:
| Kit | My read |
|---|---|
| CX650 in a CX500 frame | Probably built for the single-spine frame, not mine. The build manual picked this one |
| CX650E Eurosport | The 650E shares my frame family |
| GL650 in a GL500 frame | The GL500 is my frame’s closest relative |
The fitment tags on Murray’s pages are ambiguous, so I asked him rather than guess.
Where it stands
Murray replied on 26 Oct. Before he answers he wants a photo of the bike and the final-drive bolt count (3 or 4). That tells him which family the drivetrain is. Honda’s shop manual for my bike lists three final-gear-case nuts, but I’ll count them on the bike.
What would change it
- Murray’s answer.
- Whether the engine I buy comes with carbs and intake rubbers. Intake rubbers differ between models, so check the part numbers.
- The engine choice itself.
History
- Emailed Murray's Carbs asking which engine and kit to use. Murray replied the same day asking for a photo of the bike and the final-drive bolt count.
- The research library flagged that kit as probably built for the single-spine CX500 frame. In the E frame, 650 carbs fit.
- First look at carbs: Murray's 'CX650 in a CX500 frame' kit was assumed to be the one.
